The Sculpture of Mark Jenkins
A few days ago, I was checking out failblog.org for laughs, when I saw the above photo. It’s getting tougher to be shocked in the internet age, but I was shocked. I looked closely. There were no ripples around the body, so he wasn’t moving. Also, he’d been in there long enough for his clothes to dry out. What the heck happened to this guy? Did he have the balloons when he jumped, or were they added post-jump, the result of a very dark sense of humor?
It turned out to be the work of the artist Mark Jenkins, and his site is filled with photos and videos of some great installations. The piece bellow is made entirely of clear packing tape. It’s a clever, cheap and beautiful technique, and he’s been kind enough to make a how-to site on the process.

Comment by :: smo :: — May 21, 2009 @ 1:39 pmI can’t remember the last time art made me laugh out loud like this guy’s stuff. Balloons with a face-down corpse. Oh my god. Also, the graffiti artist with the petering-out spray line…geezis that’s good.
