If you swing through Montreal, you must stop and pick up some bagels at Fairmount or St-Viateur bagel factory. Trust me. I live in NYC. Montreal has the better bagels.
You can thank me later ;)

When I was in college, I was also lucky enough to have a professor who encouraged us to attend the festival. I've gone every year since, except for last year, and plan to get back there this fall. The first few years I shared the car trip with a few other people, but lately flying is better for me since it takes less time. Students, take this awesome bit of advice from Fran!

Great post, I couldn't agree more that every student, as well as animator should go if in any way possible. Your tips are fantastic and a great resource for anyone on a limited budget.

Passing through the NFB on the way to Montreal isn't the quickest way to New York, but it's a nice way to cap off a week of animation. Also, who wouldn't want to have crackers with Maral and Helen?

On the heels of Richard's thoughtful comment:

I've been to the NFB open house twice now and any potential sucking seems to get lost in the convoluted maze on the way to the animation studios. It's really cool seeing what filmmakers are doing and how they work and what strange apparati have been invented to accomplish what peculiar function, not to mention which ghosts haunt which corner of the building and what kinds of debauchery took place in which stairwell in what year, etc.

Plus, I think I remember Fran mentioning this is a better driving route anyway, no?

Just to add. If you're splitting a hotel 4 ways, you can probably split a rental car 4 ways as well. That'll probably cost about the same PLUS you can swing through Montreal on the way back for the open house at the NFB.

The NFB may suck though, I haven't been there and can't vouch for it. But apparently the field where McLaren shot "Neighbors" is still there.
